NEW DELHI, April 14 (Xinhua) -- A popular Indian regional singer has been shot by assailants in northern state of Punjab, police said Saturday.

The incident took place late Friday night when Parmish Verma, who sings in regional Punjabi language, was returning home in the city of Mohali.

"Some unidentified persons fired shots at Parmish last night at Sector 91 in Mohali when he was returning home," local police chief Kuldeep Chahal told the media.

"He has survived the attack and currently undergoing treatment at a hospital where his condition is said to be stable," he added.

A massive manhunt has been launched to track down the assailants. "We have booked the attackers and scanning footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area," another official said.

Attacks on singers are not uncommon in northern Indian states of Punjab and Haryana. Enditem
