Schalke's Nastasic ruled out for rest of season

BERLIN, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Matija Nastasic will be sidelined for the rest of the season due to a knee injury, Schalke announced in an official statement on Thursday.

The "Royal Blues" did not only lose 3-2 to last placed Hamburg on Saturday but they also lost their defender Matija Nastasic to a posterior cruciate ligament rupture in his right knee.

The 25-year-old centre back had to be replaced by Nabil Bentaleb in the 75th minute due to knee problems. A further examination revealed the ligament injury.

According to the club's statement, Serbia's international will be out of action for at least "eight to 12 weeks". Whether Nastasic will be able to partake in the FIFA World Cup in Russia this summer "remains to be seen" .

Nastasic's heavy injury is a set back for Schalke's head coach Domenico Tedesco as the centre back will be unavailable for the upcoming derby against local rival Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.

Runnerup Schalke host third placed Dortmund at the 30th round in Bundesliga on Sunday. Enditem
