EU budget will matter less and less for Polish economic growth:Deputy FM

WARSAW, April 12 (Xinhua) -- The importance of the European Union's budget for Poland's development and economic growth will be diminishing in the long term but the EU's trade policy will be significant, Polish Press Agency quoted Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Konrad Szymanski as reporting on Thursday.

Appearing before the Sejm (lower house of parliament) committee for EU affairs, Szymanski said that "in some timeframe" Poland will be leaving the group of countries characterised by developmental shortcomings.

"The importance of the EU budget for the development, developmental opportunities and economic growth in Poland will be diminishing in the long term," the diplomat said, "but the signs of it happening are already distinguishable."

"For Poland, as for every country which is developing economically, which is getting wealthy," he added, "of growing importance will be the shape and the openness of the single market, the shape and power of the EU's trade policy."

In Szymanski's view, these issues will not be solved "today or tomorrow," but nevertheless Poland regards "as sensible a conversation about raising contributions to the EU budget, or about building new resources - these measures are not connected with short-term interests." Enditem
