BEIJING -- China's major stock indices closed lower Thursday, dragged down by weak performance of banking heavyweights.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index went down 0.87 percent to end at 3,180.16 points, while the smaller Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.75 percent lower at 10,726.95 points.

Combined turnover on the two bourses shrank to 428.6 billion yuan (68.2 billion U.S. dollars) from 574 billion yuan the previous trading day.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Thursday as the market mood was cautions amid geopolitical tensions pertaining to a possible U.S. military response to allegations the Syrian government used chemical weapons.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 26.82 points, or 0.12 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 21,660.28.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, finished lost 6.78 points, or 0.39 percent, lower to finish at 1,718.52.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 66.43 points, or 0.21 percent, to 30,831.28 points on Thursday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 30,637.14 and 31,094.11. Turnover totaled 100.98 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 12.85 billion U.S. dollars).

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Thursday moved up 3.95 points, or 0.22 percent, to close at 1,767.17 points.

Some 9.07 billion shares worth 46.02 billion baht (about 1.48 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed higher Thursday. The market continued to trade higher amid consolidation as investors await macro data due later in the day and Infosys earnings next day.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 34,101.13, 160.69 point or 0.47 percent up compared to its previous close at 33,940.44.

SINGAPORE -- Singaporean stocks closed lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) went down 0.32 percent or 11.15 points to close at 3,468.61.

A total of 1.6 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 1.13 billion Singapore dollars (about 863.37 million U.S. dollars). Losers outnumbered gainers by 219 to 192.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended slightly lower Thursday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) lost 1.51 points, or 0.06 percent, to settle at 2,442.71. Trading volume stood at 436.1 million shares worth 8 trillion won (7.5 billion U.S. dollars).

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 135.63 points on Thursday, up 1.89 points or 1.41 percent against the previous trading session.

About 51.351 million shares worth some 883.052 billion Vietnamese dong (some 39.3 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Thursday, a decrease of 39.7 percent in volume and 47.3 percent in value against the previous trading session.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 1,173.02 points on Thursday, up 5.91 points, or 0.51 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 179.985 million shares worth 5.956 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (265.01 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange.

VN30-Index, the new benchmark index for the southern bourse, which tracks the 30 leading stocks by both market capitalization and liquidity, closed at 1,143.5 points, up 6.3 points or 0.55 percent.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 1.25 percent higher on Thursday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 99.14 points to 8043.07. The all-share index went up by 45.11 points, or 0.94 percent, to 4858.82.

Trading volume reached 1.45 billion shares worth 5.94 billion pesos (114.37 million U.S. dollars).

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia's stocks finished lower on Thursday, with the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index down 0.9 point, or 0.27 percent, to close at 338.49 points.

A total of 14,292 shares worth 58.4 million riel (14,609 U.S. dollars) were traded.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Thursday, up 0.06 percent, compared to the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index increased by 0.56 points to reach 953.96 points after closing.
