BERLIN, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Austrian striker Marcel Sabitzer had extended his contract ahead of schedule, Bundesliga club Leipzig announced in an official statement on Wednesday.
Sabitzer has put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension, which will keep him with the "Bulls" until June 2022.
Sabitzer came from Salzburg in the summer 2015 to provide 22 goals and 15 assists in 100 competitive appearances for Leipzig. Moreover, he has large shares on Leipzig's promotion into Germany's top flight.
"Marcel has continued to evolve over the past three years. He has a very good mentality and is a leader on the pitch. Therefore, we are pleased that we have been able to retain another key player on the long term," Leipzig's sporting director Ralf Rangnick said.
The 24-year-old striker is, since 2012, part of Austria's national team where he scored five goals in 29 international caps.
"I still feel very well at Leipzig, I also feel great trust and I am pleased about my contract extension here. I am not yet at the end of my development and I want to continue to do my part to take the next step. I think a lot is possible with Leipzig," Sabitzer told the club's official homepage.
Leipzig sit currently on the 6th place of the Bundesliga standings. They clash with Werder Bremen at the 30th round in Bundesliga on Sunday. Enditem
