Bangladeshi PM announces to abolish quota system for gov't jobs amid students protests

Xinhua,April 11, 2018 Adjust font size:

DHAKA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Bangladeshi Prime Minister Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday announced to abolish the quota system for government jobs amid students protests.

"The quota system will be abolished," Hasina said while addressing at the parliament Wednesday afternoon when thousands of students blocked many major roads in parts of the capital Dhaka, bringing traffic jams for hours.

It was not known immediately whether students rallying under the banner of the Council for the Preservation of General Students' Rights will discontinue their movement following premier's assurance to scrap the system.

In line with the Bangladeshi gouvernment's existing quota system, 56 percent government posts are reserved for the families of disadvantaged minorities and descendants of veterans from Bangladesh's independence war in 1971. Enditem
