BAGHDAD -- Iraq's influential Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr offered Tuesday mediation to end the differences between Saudi Arabia and Iran in order to reduce the impact of the conflict on Iraq and the region as well.

In a statement posted on his official website, Sadr said he is ready to mediate the dispute between Iran and Saudi Arabia, "for the benefit of Iraq first and the (Middle East) region second." (Iraq-Iran-Saudi-Shiite Cleric)

JERUSALEM -- Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman praised Tuesday a sniper who shot a Palestinian protester in the Gaza Strip after a video footage of soldiers cheering at the shooting went viral on social networks.

The video shows some Israeli soldiers cheering after one of three unarmed Palestinians was shot and fell to the ground near the fence between the besieged Palestinian enclave and Israel during a rally on Friday. (Israel-Palestinian-Soldiers)

DAMASCUS -- The Syrian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday it has sent UN an invitation for a fact-finding mission to investigate the allegations of chemical weapons use in Damascus' eastern district of Douma, state news agency SANA reported.

The Syrian government confirmed in a statement its willingness to provide help to the mission in the investigation, with the appeal being sent to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). (Syria-UN-Chemical Weapons)

JERUSALEM -- Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman vowed on Tuesday that Israel will not allow Iranian foothold in Syria, no matter what the cost will be.

The remark came a day after Israeli war jets allegedly attacked the T-4 military air base in Homs, killing 14 people. Israel was accused by Russia and Syria of carrying out the strike but has not officially confirmed its involvement. (Israel-Russia-Syria)
