CHANGCHUN, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Police in northeast China's Jilin Province recently caught 114 suspects in a telecom fraud case, involving more than 500 million yuan (79 million U.S. dollars).
Changchun City police were informed in March 2017 that a local company had been selling fake medicine to seniors by luring them with free gifts and false advertisement.
After a year's investigation, police confirmed that the company, founded in 2013, had been promoting fake medicine and healthcare products over the phone. It also arranged for people to pretend to be doctors to cheat the elderly.
Some 10,000 people were victims, mostly the sick, those on low-incomes and the elderly. Some victims had their illness worsen after using the fake medicine for a long time without proper treatment.
Over 500 million yuan was cheated out of the victims.
The suspects have been detained. Enditem
