DUBAI, April 9 (Xinhua) -- The 8th Annual Investment Meeting (AIM) kicked off in Dubai on Monday, focusing on regional investment, sustainable development, new direction of economies, digital innovation and sovereign wealth funds among others.

The United Arab Emirates' (UAE) Vice President and Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, opened the meeting, whose theme is "Linking Advanced Markets to Youth and Partnership for Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development."

The meeting attracted more than 140 countries and regions and over 1,000 potential investors, including scores of Chinese firms.

China covers one of the biggest country pavilions, with entities from China's southern Guangdong Province, northwestern Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province, and northern coastal city of Tianjin.

"We are participating for the first time at the AIM and we see a good chance to enter the Gulf Arab market with our agricultural and inulin products," said Salina Yang, chief operating officer at Faninon Co. Ltd. from Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province.

The UAE Minister of Economy, Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, said "The UAE seeks to attract foreign direct investment and quantity to help achieve the vision of the UAE 2021 in order to achieve sustainable development."

"Between 2003 and 2016, the UAE attracted some 4,500 new foreign investment projects from a total of about 12,900 projects in the Arab countries combined, reflecting the competitiveness of our national economy and the efficiency of its business environment," he added.

The foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow into the UAE reached 10.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2017, up from 9.6 billion dollars in 2016, according to the UAE Competitiveness and Statistics Authority. This took the total FDI stock of the country to 128.94 billion dollars in 2017.
