Japan replaces head coach Halilhodzic 2 months ahead of World Cup

TOKYO, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Vahid Halilhodzic will be replaced as Japan's head coach by former Gamba Osaka boss and Japan Football Association (JFA) technical director Akira Nishino, the JFA said on Monday.

Halilhodzic being replaced comes just two months until the start of the World Cup finals in Russia and despite the 65-year-old guiding Japan to its sixth straight appearance in the World Cup finals.

The JFA said it told Halilhodzic of its decision on Saturday with Nishino coming to the job after managing Gamba for 10 seasons; winning the league in 2005 and the Asian Championship League in 2008. Nishino took the job as JFA technical director in 2016.

Some fans expressed their bemusement at the decision coming so close to the World Cup finals, stating that the squad would now not have enough time to prepare. Enditem
