Nigeria says military rescues 149 Boko Haram hostages

LAGOS, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian army on Sunday confirmed that 149 people held hostage by Boko Haram have been rescued in an operation in the northeastern state of Borno.

The troops also killed five insurgents and captured five others in the encounter at Yerimari-Kura community, near Sambisa axis of the state, Col. Onyeama Nwachukwu, a military spokesperson, said in a statement.

The rescued persons included 54 women and 95 children, Nwachukwu said.

The spokesperson added that the troops also neutralized two suicide bombers at Mandanari community in Konduga, Borno, when they attempted to infiltrate the community on April 7.

Nigeria has made considerable gains against the terror group, dislodging its fighters from the Sambisa Forest.

Boko Haram has been blamed for the death of more than 20,000 people and displacement of 2.3 million others in Nigeria since 2009. Enditem
