Israel charges Palestinian gunman with killing Israeli in West Bank

JERUSALEM, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Israeli military charged on Sunday a Palestinian man with his involvement in a deadly shooting attack in the West Bank in January, which claimed the life of an Israeli rabbi.

The indictment was issued to the Samaria Military Court in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

It charged Ahmed Qoneba, a 28-year-old resident of Jenin city in the northern West Bank, with intentional manslaughter (a criminal offense equivalent to murder) of Rabbi Raziel Shevach.

On Jan. 9, Qoneba and his associate Ahmed Jarar shot and killed Shevach in the Israeli outpost of Khavat Gil'ad in the West Bank. Jarar was killed by security forces during the attempt to apprehend him on Feb. 6.

Qoneba is charged also with involvement in "numerous attempts to carry out terror attacks against soldiers and Israeli civilians, and committing additional security offenses," the army said in a statement.

The deadly attack was part of a surge of Palestinian attacks in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in last December. Enditem
