4 killed, 5 injured in bus-car collision in southern India

NEW DELHI, April 8 (Xinhua) -- At least four people were killed and five others injured in a road accident in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, police said Sunday.

"The accident occurred when a state-run bus collided with a car near the state's Haliyal town after its driver lost control of the speeding vehicle," a police official said.

While four people died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a local hospital, he said, adding that the victims included occupants of both the vehicles.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said. "The bus driver has been booked for rash and negligent driving and efforts are on to arrest him," he added.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles. Enditem
