Passenger vehicle and truck collision kills 8 in south Ethiopia

Xinhua,April 06, 2018 Adjust font size:

ADDIS ABABA, April 6 (Xinhua) -- A collision between a passenger vehicle and freighter truck on Thursday evening in Ethiopia's Southern regional state has killed eight people, an Ethiopian official said on Friday.

Yusuf Mohammed, Chief Inspector of Abeshege Woreda Criminal Investigation Bureau, Southern regional state, said six other people who received heavy injuries in the accident have been taken to nearby health stations for further treatment, reported state affiliated media outlet Radio Fana.

Police are currently investigating the cause of the deadly collision.

Despite having one of the lowest per capita car ownership in the world, deadly traffic accidents in Ethiopia are common with blames put on bad roads, flawed driving license issuance system and lax enforcement of road safety.

Traffic accidents during the Ethiopian Fiscal Year 2016/17 that ended on July 8, 2017 led to the deaths of 4,500 people, according to Ethiopia Federal Transport Authority. Enditem
