TRIPOLI, April 5 (Xinhua) -- The Libyan authorities announced Thursday the launch of a smart project for the capital Tripoli.
The project, named Smart Tripoli, will be carried out in partnership between the Ministry of Interior and the General Authority of Communications and Informatics.
"This project contributes to introducing electronic administration of the capital at all levels, helping monitor security and reduce crime, as well as facilitating traffic, medical emergency and weather," said Abdulrahman Abu-Dabra, director of Planning and Smart Administration of the Authority, at a joint press conference with the Authority chief and the Interior Minister.
"The project includes installation of 1,500 surveillance cameras in more than 400 locations in Tripoli. They will be connected to observation and monitoring points through a main control room," Abu-Dabra noted.
For Sami Al-Gantazi, head of the General Authority of Communications and Informatics, the project will "contribute to the development of the capital's management based on modern technology."
He said similar projects will be launched in other highly populated cities such as Benghazi and Misurata.
"The project of Smart Tripoli represents the basis for strategic security of Libya, starting from the capital to the rest of the cities," said Interior Minister Abdassalam Ashour.
Major Libyan cities, including Tripoli, Benghazi, Misurata and Sabha, are suffering from high levels of crimes and terrorist activities.
In February, the eastern-based government approved a package of security measures to counter terrorist threats in Benghazi, including the installation of hundreds of surveillance cameras and use of explosives detection devices. Enditem
