ACCRA, April 5 (Xinhua) -- The Ghanaian police shot and killed five suspected robbers after a fierce gun battle on the Tema to Accra expressway Thursday dawn, police sources said.

George Alex Mensah, Accra Regional Police Commander, told journalists that they picked intelligence that about 15 armed robbers had planned to embark on a number of attacks in the area.

Mensah said as police tried to stop and inspect the suspects' vehicles, they started firing indiscriminately into the police surveillance car, narrowly missing the policemen on board. The police team then engaged the suspects in the shootout, he explained.

He also disclosed the police retrieved weapons and "talismans" believed to be charms to aid the robbers in their operations.

The commander said the police were on the lookout for other suspects who escaped with injuries.

The West African country has witnessed an increase in armed robberies in recent times in the capital and the Accra regional police boss said the robbers were connected to such crimes.

The development attracted a public outcry compelling the country's Inspector-General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu, to effect 11 major changes in the command structure of the Ghana Police Service on March 1.

The government has announced the deployment of joint military and police teams code-named "operation calm life" to patrol the cities as part of measures to combat the growing crime. Enditem
