DUBAI, April 5 (Xinhua) -- The passenger demand of Middle East carriers posted a 3.4 percent increase in February year on year, though still lagging behind their peers elsewhere in the world, an official statement said Thursday.
Capacity, or available seat kilometers, rose 3.9 percent, but the load factor defined as the capacity utilization slipped 0.3 percentage point to 74.1 percent, said the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in a statement.
The global body of civil aviation said carriers in the region "faced significant headwinds over the past year including the temporary ban on large portable electronic devices as well as the proposed travel bans to the United States."
The underperformance of the regional carriers becomes even more striking, as on a global scale "we saw a return to stronger demand growth in February after the temporary slowdown in January," said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA's director general and CEO.
Latin American airlines posted the fastest year-on-year growth for a second consecutive month. Enditem
