Russia expels Hungarian Embassy employee amid ex-spy dispute

MOSCOW, April 4 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Foreign Ministry announced Wednesday that it would expel a Hungarian Embassy employee in a tit-for-tat over the poisoning of former Russian agent Sergei Skripal.

Earlier in the day, Hungarian Ambassador to Russia Janos Balla was summoned to the foreign ministry, where he received a note of protest against Hungary's expulsion of a Russian diplomat on March 26 based on Britain's "unproven allegations" against Russia, the ministry said in a press release.

In response to this "unfriendly and unreasonable" move, the Russian side declared an employee of the Hungarian Embassy as "persona non grata," it said.

Skripal and his daughter Yulia were reportedly exposed to a nerve agent in the British city of Salisbury on March 4. Britain and its allies accused Russia of launching a chemical attack against them, but Moscow has repeatedly denied any involvement.

Western countries expelled a total of about 150 Russian diplomats in a concerted action, while Russia has so far expelled diplomats from 27 countries in response. Enditem
