Morocco holds high-level int'l conference on judiciary independence

RABAT, April 2 (Xinhua) -- An international conference on judiciary independence kicked off on Monday in the Moroccan city of Marrakech, with the participation of global ministers, experts and rights organizations.

The three-day conference discusses many themes related to the evolution of judiciary independence in a changing world, the governance of the judicial administration and strengthening of its efficiency, and the development of institutional capacities of judicial system.

In a message by the Moroccan King Mohammed VI to the participants, the king said that Morocco has taken practical measures to lay the foundations for judicial independence, noting that Morocco remains concerned over the stakes and challenges relating to judicial systems worldwide.

He stressed that the major challenge is the obligation to guarantee judiciary independence in practical terms, noting that it is the judge's duty to comply with the requirements of independence and integrity and stay away from any influence or temptation.

The king stressed the importance of developing means to realize a balance between the obligation to safeguard rights and freedoms and the need to preserve values and pillars of society and to shield it against anything that may threaten it. Enditem
