Widow of Orlando nightclub gunman acquitted

Xinhua,March 31, 2018 Adjust font size:

WASHINGTON, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Noor Salman, the widow of Pulse nightclub gunman Omar Mateen, was acquitted Friday on charges of lying to federal investigators and aiding her husband in the 2016 attack that killed 49 people.

Salman, 31, was cleared of two counts by the jury in U.S. District Court. She could have faced up to life in prison if convicted of federal charges of obstruction of justice and helping her husband in providing material support to the Islamic State (IS) militant.

Mateen, who had claimed allegiance to an IS leader, died in an exchange of gunfire with police at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, state of Florida. Salman was married to him when attack happened.

Salman's acquittal could be an emotional blow for the survivors and families of those killed during the shooting massacre on June 12, 2016.

The attack is the second-deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter in the U.S. History, behind the 2017 Las Vegas shooting that killed 58. Enditem
