TIRANA, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Albanian and Italian police launched Wednesday a joint project aimed at enhancing cooperating against cannabis cultivation and trafficking, Albanian General State Directory said in a statement.

In a meeting with a visiting delegation from Italian state police, General Director of Albania's State Police Ardi Veliu expressed his appreciation and gratitude for the project "Support to the Anti-cannabis Strategy -- Air Surveillance".

Veliu said for 2018 the Albanian State Police was committed to not only keeping the results achieved during 2017 against the Cannabis cultivation phenomenon, but to eradicating this phenomenon.

The aim of this project called "SANCAS" between Albanian and Italian police will be to monitor the territory through the air for preventing and hitting the cultivation of narcotics.

"For 2018, State Police will come up with an efficient police strategy and increase flight hours 30 percent more than in 2017," said Veliu.

He added that the Albanian State Police had drafted a detailed plan for territorial control, on identifying and hitting the seed security phenomenon, cultivating seedlings and narcotics Cannabis Sativa in abandoned tunnels, former state reserves and any other possible environment, for use by criminal groups.

"A very valuable component of the project is the assistance it provides in the field of technology, orienting and supporting the State Police in expanding its database," Veliu highlighted.

Furthermore, he said that the establishment of a research lab was a powerful foundation for Albania's police, adding that what was of interest to this project was encouraging citizens to report drug offenses.

Speaking about the joint cooperation, the Director of the Italian International Police Cooperation Service, Brigadier General CC Paolo D' Ambolo, said he was convinced of the positive results of this project.

"We are confident because we know our colleagues, our Albanian friends who are capable and have yielded results as far as cannabis warfare is concerned," he noted at a statement.

"SANCAS" project is funded by the European Union. Last March, the Albanian government approved a national action plan to combat cultivation and trafficking of cannabis for 2017-2020. Enditem
