Ukraine seeks dialogue with NATO on membership action plan: media

Xinhua,March 30, 2018 Adjust font size:

KIEV, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine plans to launch an official dialogue with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on taking part in the Membership Action Plan (MAP) to join the alliance this year, the Ukrainian government-run Ukrinform news agency said Thursday, citing an official document.

The MAP is a NATO program offering advice, assistance and practical support to countries wishing to join the alliance. Participation in the MAP does not guarantee a membership.

In 2003, Ukraine declared a course towards NATO accession, but revoked the policy in 2010, declaring non-aligned status.

Last year, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that a referendum on NATO membership would be held by 2020.

In the same year, the Eastern European country resumed its course towards joining the alliance, pledging to implement reforms in its security, defense, justice and anti-corruption sectors. Enditem
