France demonstrates constructive approach to bilateral ties: Kremlin

Xinhua,March 29, 2018 Adjust font size:

MOSCOW, March 29 (Xinhua) -- France has demonstrated a constructive approach to developing relations with Russia as its leadership does not abandon dialogue with Moscow despite disagreements, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday.

Peskov made the remarks when he confirmed that preparations for the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Russia in May continue after the United States and some European countries concertedly expelled Russian diplomats over the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal in Britain.

France announced on Monday that it would expel four Russian diplomats within a week in solidarity with its British partners.

The French leadership is ready to solve existing problems through dialogue, which corresponds with the approach of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Peskov said at a daily news briefing.

Earlier in the day, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said that Macron's visit to Russia remains on the schedule despite escalated tensions between Russia and Western countries.

In October 2017, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Macron had accepted an invitation to visit Russia and attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in May 2018.

On March 4, Skripal and his daughter were found unconscious on a bench in a shopping center in the southern British city of Salisbury.

France agreed with Britain that Russia was responsible for the poisoning, Macron's office said on March 15. Russia denied any involvement in the poisoning incident. Enditem
