HANOI, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Ousted Vietnamese political bureau member Dinh La Thang on Thursday was sentenced 18 years behind bars for intentionally violating state regulations on economic management.
The Hanoi People's Court passed the verdict on Thang, born in 1960, former chairman of the member council of state-owned National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam or PVN).
According to the verdict, besides the jail term, he will have to pay 800 billion Vietnamese dong (35.2 million U.S. dollars) in compensation to PetroVietnam.
He caused losses of 800 billion Vietnamese dong to PetroVietnam after arbitrarily letting the group invest the money from 2008 to 2011 in a poorly-performing local bank named OceanBank.
In January, Thang received a jail term of 13 years, and one of his accomplices, Trinh Xuan Thanh, got a life sentence, in an economic case relating to PetroVietnam Construction Joint Stock Corporation under PetroVietnam.
Also on Thursday, six other former officials of the state-owned group received suspension or imprisonment sentences ranging from 15 months to 23 years for the same charge of intentionally violating state regulations on economic management, causing serious consequences.
Late last year, Vietnam's Central Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption agreed on plans to finalize the investigation, prosecution and judgment regarding 23 corruption and economic cases in 2017 and in the first quarter of 2018.(1 U.S. dollar equals 22809.5 Vietnamese dong) Enditem
