JOHANNESBURG, March 28 (Xinhua) -- South Africa's Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) said 22 people have died in the country's mining sector in the first quarter of 2018 and called for safety measures to be improved.
The Department of Mineral Resources said this in a statement on Wednesday. They called on stakeholders in the sector including government, labor and business to work together to end fatalities and long term sustainability of the sector.
"Mineral Resources Minister Mr Gwede Mantashe has called for increased vigilance on health and safety in the sector. This follows three fatalities which have been reported at mines this week. Health and safety is among the Minister's key focus areas and immediate priorities since assuming office," said Ayanda Shezi, DMR head of communications.
The Department of Mineral resources called on employers and labor to continue to work with them in finding solutions to health and safety matters at the mines, through established structures including the Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC).
In 2017, a total of 88 miners died which was the first increase in the last 10 years. In 2016 the mining sector lost 73 people at work. Enditem
