NANNING, China, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez was very pleased with his side's performance after they beat Wales 1-0 in the final of the China Cup International Football Tournament here on Monday evening.
"It was a tough match. I'm very satisfied with the result and I think that we can even get better if we didn't suffer from jet lag or injuries. I think the result was very satisfactory," Tabarez said.
Wales went behind after a cagey first half when Edinson Cavani broke free to score the only goal of the game in the 49th minute.
Having put six goals past China four days ago, Ryan Giggs' side found it difficult to break down a disciplined Uruguay defense.
"Of course against teams like that (Uruguay) you're going to ride your luck a bit. They showed us the utmost respect by keeping (Luis) Suarez and Cavani going till the end," Giggs said.
Giggs made several substitutions throughout the course of the game, but he found it tough going against an experienced Uruguayan side. Giggs did take care to praise a young group of players.
"It was a great learning curve for a lot of the players and it was also a great test. What I want from my players is to go till the end and that's what we did," Giggs said.
For his part, Tabarez was pleased with the result and the composure his side showed against a potentially tricky Welsh outfit.
Tabarez said his side made "special plans for Gareth Bale" and even though there was some inexperience in his defense. Whatever those plans were, they were successful.
Uruguay also hit the upright twice and Cavani missed some clear-cut chances. The night could have been a lot worse for the Welsh. Enditem
