2 militants killed in Indian-controlled Kashmir gunfight

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Two militants were killed in an overnight gunfight with contingents of police and army in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Saturday.

The gunfight erupted Friday night at Shistargam locality of Dooru village in Anantnag district, about 83 km south of Srinagar city.

"In an overnight gunfight in Dooru, two militants were killed in a fierce gunfight with contingents of police and army," a police spokesman said. "The joint contingents cordoned off the area following information about presence of militants."

According to police, no sooner the contingents moved closer to the suspected area, it came under heavy fire, which was duly retaliated.

The identity of slain militants was being ascertained. However, initial reports suggest, of the two slain militants, one was identified as local and another foreigner.

Police officials said government forces have not suffered any damage in the stand-off. Enditem
