Zambian leader says not bothered by opposition's impeachment move

LUSAKA, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Edgar Lungu said Friday he was not bothered by a decision by opposition to lay a motion for his impeachment in parliament.

On Thursday, opposition lawmakers from the United Party for National Development (UPND), Zambia's main opposition party, submitted a motion to commence impeachment proceedings against Lungu.

The opposition lawmakers have tabulated a number of accusations against the Zambian leader in their motion, which they claim borders on breach of the country's constitution.

But Amos Chanda, presidential spokesperson, said the move will not go anywhere.

"We have looked at the motion and it contains nothing but full of gossip and does not deserve the dignity to be tabled before the House," he told reporters during a press briefing.

The presidential spokesperson added that the motion will not succeed as the opposition party lacks the numbers in parliament to make two-third of the lawmakers needed to pass voting.

He further said the impeachment motion was a slap on the current dialogue process by political partners being spearheaded by the Commonwealth following the disputed 2016 general elections. Enditem
