WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to veto the 1.3-trillion-U.S.-dollar spending bill just passed by Congress.
Trump tweeted that he was considering the move as 800,000 recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program "have been totally abandoned by Democrats" and his long-promised border wall "is not fully funded." (US-Trump-Spending)

BRUSSELS -- The European Union (EU) is recalling its ambassador to Russia in response to the poisoning of Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal in Britain earlier this month.
The European External Action Service announced in a statement on Friday that the European Council has requested Federica Mogherini, the EU foreign policy chief, to recall the head of the EU delegation in Russia who is expected to arrive in Brussels this weekend. (EU-Russia)

PARIS -- A man claiming allegiance to the Islamic State took several people hostage at a supermarket in southwestern France on Friday, local media reported.
The unidentified man entered a Super U supermarket in Trebes town, and gunshots were heard later, local news channel BFM TV reported. (France-Hostages)

KABUL -- At least 71 Taliban militants were killed and 34 others wounded during clashes with Afghan security forces and airstrikes throughout the country within the past 24 hours, Afghan Defense Ministry said Friday.
Out of the killed militants were 14 fighters of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, the ministry said in a statement. (Afghanistan-Clashes)

DAMASCUS -- An agreement has been reached on Friday for the evacuation of rebels and their families from new areas in the capital Damascus' Eastern Ghouta countryside, according to the state TV.
As many as 7,000 rebels and their family members are to leave areas of Jobar, Zamalka, Arbeen, and Ayn Tarma in Eastern Ghouta, and the deal covers the main rebel groups in control of those areas, namely the Failaq al-Rahman, and the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front, according to the report.
