MADRID, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Two people are confirmed to have died and another injured by an avalanche in the Pyrenees mountains, rescue services reported on Thursday.

The avalanche occurred on Thursday morning in an area known as the Valle de Aran, just on the Spanish side of the border with France.

The communique said that members of the Catalan fire brigade "have found three people, two of whom are dead, and the third one with multiple injuries," after receiving an alert at 10:05 a.m. local time.

The identity and nationality of the victims is not yet known, although they are reported to have been carrying out "investigative work" when the tragedy occurred.

The region around 300 km northwest of Barcelona has experienced heavy snow and high winds in recent days, making conditions both difficult and dangerous. Enditem
