Myanmar parliament to elect new parliament speaker

Xinhua,March 22, 2018 Adjust font size:

YANGON, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's parliamentary House of Representatives (Lower House) will elect a new speaker Thursday to fill the post left vacant by U Win Myint, who announced resignation from the position on Wednesday, according to parliament sources.

If necessary, a deputy speaker of the House will also be elected, the sources said.

The re-election of a new speaker of the House of Representatives is set to be followed by the re-election of a new President in the Union Parliament in a week after President U Htin Kyaw announced resignation on Wednesday.

U Htin Kyaw, 72, resigned out of his own wish for health reasons.

Meanwhile, in line with the constitution, First Vice President U Myint Swe will serve as the acting president until the parliament re-elects the president, according to U Zaw Htay, director-general of the President's Office. Enditem
