Over 75,000 Spaniards moved abroad in 2017: official data

MADRID, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Over 75,000 Spaniards moved abroad during 2017, according to data published by the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE) on Tuesday.

In total 76,197 Spaniards moved abroad last year, 3.2 percent more than in 2016, meaning that according to the INE, 2.4 million Spanish people now live in other countries.

Britain saw a 10.5 percent rise in the number of Spaniards moving there, despite the implications of Brexit, followed by the United States (8 percent) and Bolivia (7.4 percent).

Meanwhile, in absolute terms, the countries with most Spanish residents on Jan. 1, 2018 were Argentina (457,204), France (253,036) and Venezuela (167,255).

INE highlights that two thirds of the Spaniards who left the country were born in another country and adopted Spanish nationality, with just 32.6 percent of those who left actually born in Spain.

A total of 1.56 million people (63 percent) of those living abroad are of working age, between 16 and 63 years old. Enditem
