Uganda names final track and field team for 2018 Commonwealth Games

   KAMPALA, March 6 (Xinhua) -- The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) named the final 23-person team that will take part in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia.

   "It has been a hectic period of qualification for the athletics and we are happy we managed to qualify 24, but only because Stephen Kiprotich has opted out," Dominic Otuchet, President of the Federation told Xinhua on Tuesday.

   "I am confident that with a very talented team, we shall return with a number of medals," added Otuchet.

   Moses Kipsiro, a three-time Commonwealth Games medal winner has also made the team for the 10,000m race. He will try and defend the gold medal he won at the last Games in Scotland. "I have been running in the marathon lately, but I have decided to go run in the 10,000m race," Kipsiro told Xinhua.

   The Commonwealth Games brings together member nations or regions of the Commonwealth and will take place April 4-15 at Gold Coast.  Solomon Munyo Mutai, another star marathon runner who earlier pulled out because of injury two months ago has also made a return after taking part in a half marathon in Morocco.

   Mutai finished eighth at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil and also won a bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, China.

   Uganda is expected to field around 70 athletes for the Commonwealth Games. Already five weightlifters, the netball and rugby 7s teams, 23 track and field athletes have secured direct qualification for the Games. Uganda will also field athletes in boxing, badminton, squash, swimming, cycling, shooting and table tennis.
