NEW YORK, March. 5 (Xinhua) -- Lake Placid has been granted the right to host the 2023 Winter Universiade, the Governor of the New York State Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday.
The International University Sports Federation (FISU) has signed a memorandum of understanding with representatives from local organizers to approve the village's bid after FISU senior leaders paid a visit to the Adirondack region.
Being the host for the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games with a strong resume of hosting international high-level events, the small village in Essex County has convinced the FISU of its ability to repeat the success of hosting the Winter Universiade in 1972.
"FISU has no doubt that Lake Placid would be a great host for the 2023 Winter Universiade, making a lifelong impact on the thousands of student-athletes [who] would come from all around the world," FISU President Oleg Marytsin said.
The Winter Universiade is the largest university winter multi-sport competition held every two years. The 11-day competition sees nearly 2,500 student-athletes competing in various disciplines including alpine, short track speed skating, figure skating, snowboarding and curling. Enditem
