Supreme Court lifts Brazilian president's bank secrecy

Xinhua,March 06, 2018 Adjust font size:

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 5 (Xinhua) -- A Brazilian Supreme Court judge announced late Monday the lifting of the bank secrecy of President Michel Temer as part of a corruption investigation.

The announcement was made by Judge Luis Roberto Barroso, who is responsible for an investigation on whether a decree signed by Temer last year favors Rodrimar, a foreign trade and logistics company.

Shortly after the announcement, the presidential office stated that Temer will request all his bank statements from the Central Bank and make them fully available to the press.

"The president will give the press full access to this material. He has no concern about the information on his bank statements," said the presidential statement.

Brazilian Government Secretary Carlos Marun said the president has yet to be officially notified about the lifting of his bank secrecy, but has reacted to the news with indignation.

"The president will make his bank statements public. He has nothing to hide, but is disgruntled and even outraged by this decision, which we consider to be completely unjustified, especially as this inquiry has no factual basis at all to justify such a measure," Marun said. Enditem
