Belarusian president appoints new sports, tourism minister

MINSK, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Monday appointed Sergei Kovalchuk as the country's new sports and tourism minister.
The president said the development of the sports sector in the country is given great attention, because the victory of athletes is a kind of ideology, according to the press service of the president.
Kovalchuk served in the army from 1989 to 2004. Then he worked in the security service of the president.
Lukashenko said a military man was appointed to the post because the industry needs to restore order.
Kovalchuk's predecessor, Alexander Shamko, was dismissed by the president "for not taking effective measures to fight corruption and economic violations in subordinate organizations." Enditem
