Uganda to host Saudi Arabian cricket team

Xinhua,March 05, 2018 Adjust font size:

KAMPALA, March 4 (Xinhua) -- The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) has confirmed that the national team of Saudi Arabia will travel to Uganda to play a series of international games.

Martin Ondeko, an administrator at the Association, told Xinhua on Sunday that the Saudi Arabian team has confirmed they will arrive in the country on March 28 ahead of the five game series.

"This is very good news for us because playing against tough teams like Saudi Arabia will get our team stronger ahead of the ICC Division 4 qualifiers in Malaysia in April," said Ondeko.

The Middle East Division 5 team was supposed to tour last year but couldn't make it because of the qualifiers they were participating in. Saudi Arabia will also use the tour to Uganda to prepare for their T20 Asian qualifiers.

The Uganda Cricket Cranes toured Qatar and India last month where they played 13 games, won nine games and suffered four defeats. Head coach Steve Tikolo told Xinhua that he is excited about the five games they will play against Saudi Arabia. "We benefited a lot last month with games in Qatar and India and certainly playing Saudi Arabia will also give us another good international test," Tikolo said.

Uganda was relegated to Division 4 last year together with Malaysia after they finished 5th in the tournament hosted in Kampala. In Malaysia they will play against the hosts, Jersey, Bermuda and Vanuatu.

The tournament takes place between April and May 2018 in Malaysia and will also form part of the 2017-22 cycle of the World Cricket League, which determines the qualification for the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
