Spanish LaLiga to introduce VAR system for coming season

Xinhua,March 03, 2018 Adjust font size:

MADRID, March 3 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish Football League (LaLiga) has confirmed that it will introduce a system of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the 2018-2019 season in Spain.

LaLiga confirmed that the VAR system, aimed at ending controversial refereeing errors, will be introduced for the Liga Santander next season and in the second division (Liga 123) for the following campaign.

The cost of installing the system is 2.5 million euros for each division and will be used for four main points of controversy: whether a goal is legal or not, if a penalty should or should not be given, direct red cards and possible confusion of identity between players.

A similar system is already in use in the Italian, German and Portuguese Leagues, as well as in the English FA Cup, while the Premier League has a system of goal-line technology. Enditem
