2 Greek soldiers arrested in Turkey over border crossing

ISTANBUL, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Two Greek soldiers, who crossed the border into Turkey a day earlier, were arrested on Friday following a court hearing in the northwestern city of Edirne, Turkish media reported.

The Greek soldiers, a lieutenant and a sergeant, were charged with "attempting military espionage" and "entering into a military forbidden zone," the Hurriyet daily said.

According to the state-run Anadolu news agency, the soldiers, who were identified as Aggelos Mitretodis and Dimitros Kouklatzis, stated in their accounts that they lost their way due to bad weather and crossed the border inadvertently.

The duo encountered Turkish patrol units soon after crossing the border near the Evros River on Thursday and were immediately taken to the provincial gendarmerie command in Edirne, the agency said. Enditem
