Germany reports less attacks on refugees last year

Xinhua,March 01, 2018 Adjust font size:

BERLIN, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- In 2017, there were 2,219 attacks on refugees and their shelters across Germany, a decrease from a year ago, the German Press Agency (DPA) reported on Wednesday, citing statement of the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

According to the ministry's response to the parliamentary request from the Left Party, there were 1,906 attacks on refugees and 313 raids on refugee shelters last year. More than 300 people were injured as a result.

The attacks included dangerous bodily injury, property damage, insult, trespassing, severe arson and explosions.

In 2016, however, around 3,500 attacks against refugees and their shelters were recorded.

The left-wing politician Ulla Jelpke was quoted by the DPA as saying, "More than 2,000 right-wing and racist attacks on refugees in 2017 reflect an aggressive mood in the country, which is being promoted daily by the AfD and other extreme right-wing groups."

The DW cited a refugee rights organization leader, Bernd Mesovic, as saying that the fall in the number of offenses may be due to closing of many refugee shelters last year which means fewer shelters left to be raided. Enditem
