Indian police arrest ruling party's district leader for mowing down 9 kids in Bihar state

NEW DELHI, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Police have finally arrested a suspended district leader of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who had been on the run since crushing to death some nine children with his car in the eastern state of Bihar last week.

"Manoj Baitha has been taken into custody after he surrendered to a local police station in the state's Muzaffarpur district. He was taken to a hospital for a medical examination in state capital Patna," a police official said Wednesday.

Baitha allegedly ploughed into a group of children with his sports utility vehicle Saturday, in a drunken state, in which nine kids lost their lives while 20 others sustained injuries. After the accident, he got off from the car and fled.

He was suspended by the BJP earlier this week after the accident snowballed into a major outrage in India, particularly Bihar.

The BJP also governs Bihar in alliance with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's regional Janata Dal United party. Enditem
