BUJUMBURA, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Burundi on Tuesday refuted claims by UN human rights chief, describing the east African country among "the most prolific slaughterhouses of humans in recent times."
"It's very surprising, especially considering what we currently observe countrywide and considering the progress made in all aspects of the human rights sector," Jean Baptiste Baribonekeza, chairman of the Burundian National Independent Human Rights Commission said in Burundian capital Bujumbura.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein on Monday at a session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva decried "some of the most prolific slaughterhouses of humans in recent times", including Burundi, some areas in the countries of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Yemen, Myanmar and Syria.
Baribonekeza said there are no signs of mass killings or activities jeopardizing the human rights sector underway in Burundi.
"His claims were full of exaggerations. Considering figures at our disposal for 2017 and at the beginning of 2018, we assume that the human rights situation is good in the country," said the chairperson. Enditem
