MALE -- The Maldivian government on Tuesday reiterated its invitation to opposition parties to participate in all-party talks as the government had received no response to its multiple invitations.

"The government notes with disappointment that despite issuing invitations a total of eight times... no response has been received from these political parties," the President's Office said in a statement. (Maldives-Talks)

BANGKOK -- Thailand will have a general election by February 2019, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said on Tuesday.

The premier told reporters at the Government House that the nationwide election will be held no later than next February since it has been put off for another three months from November this year. (Thailand-Election)

SEOUL -- South Korean prosecutors on Tuesday demanded a 30-year jail term for ousted President Park Geun-hye, who was taken into custody a year earlier after having been removed from office.

Prosecutors asked a Seoul court to sentence Park to 30 years in prison and fine her 118.5 billion won (110.5 million U.S. dollars) for corruptions, which they said left an ineffaceable stain in the country's history of constitution. (S.Korea-Park-Jail Term)

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan's ruling party the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) appointed Shahbaz Sharif as its interim chief on Tuesday to fill the post left vacant after the top court disqualified former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to lead the party last week.

According to a statement issued from the party's Twitter account, Nawaz Sharif proposed to name his younger brother Shahbaz Sharif for the post of interim president, which was approved unanimously during a meeting of the party's central working committee in Lahore. (Pakistan-Party chief)

SEOUL -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) agreed on Tuesday to send athletes to South Korea on March 7 for the Winter Paralympics, Seoul's unification ministry said.

The agreement was reached after working-level talks between the two Koreas, held earlier in the day at Tongilgak, a DPRK building in the truce village of Panmunjom that straddles South Korea and the DPRK. (DPRK-Winter Paralympics) Enditem
