Uganda name team for Africa Cross Country Championship in Algeria

KAMPALA, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has named a team for the Africa Cross Country Championship slated for March 17 in Chlef, Algeria.

"We named a full team for the seniors and juniors and hope to compete seriously with the likes of Kenya and Ethiopia. The national trials helped us pick the best," Dominic Otuchet, President of the Federation told Xinhua on Friday.

The official said some senior runners like Thomas Ayeko and Mercyline Chelangat who will also represent Uganda at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia will lead the team in Algeria.

Stella Chesang said she is excited and is looking forward to the Championship. "We shall come against Africa's best, but we are getting in better shape ahead of the event."

Uganda will face 2016 winners Kenya who have world Under-18 3,000m silver and bronze medalists Edward Zakayo and Stanley Waithaka in the team.

Junior women: Sarah Chelangat, Peruth Chemutai, Belinda Chemutai, Risper Chebet

Junior men: Victor Kiplagat, Denis Cherotich, Hose Kiplgat, Matthew Chepkurui

Senior women: Mercyline Chelangat, Stella Chesang, Jant Chemusto, Linet Chebet

Senior men: Thomas Ayeko, Phillip Kipyeko, Nelson Wakaana, Mande Bushendich Enditem
