PYEONGCHANG, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Kjeld Nuis of the Netherlands reaped his second gold medal at the PyeongChang Winter Games as he won the men's 1,000 meters speed skating here Friday evening.
Following his victory in Tuesday's men's 1,500m, Nuis clocked one minute and 07.95 seconds to become the third man to win the 1,000m and 1,500m at a single Olympic Winter Games.
After the race, Nuis paid tribute to 16th-placed finisher Mika Poutala of Finland, whose extraordinary gesture to give way on the crossover in their pairing allowed Nuis to clinch his second Olympic title of the Games.
"He saved my life," said Nuis, "The last cross was, 'Thanks Mika'. He let me go first and it was very sporting of him.
"I was afraid that I would mess his race and I knew he was battling for the win and I wasn't battling for the medal anymore," Poutala said. "I didn't want to take any chances and ruin his race."
Norway's Havard Lorentzen, the winner of the 500m, took the silver with 1:07.99 and the bronze went to South Korean Kim Tae-yun in 1:08.22. Enditem
