Ghanaian president swears in Special Prosecutor to fight corruption

ACCRA, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo on Friday swore in Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor, calling for active co-operation of all citizens in the fight against corruption.

He said Ghanaians, who had in overwhelming numbers denounced corruption that had engulfed public life in recent years, expected the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to rise to the occasion.

"We expect the Special Prosecutor to discharge his duties vigorously, with courage, without fear or favor, ill-will or malice, in accordance with the rule of law," Akufo-Addo said at the brief ceremony in Accra.

He cautioned Amidu, a former running mate to late President John Atta Mills, not to use his office for persecution or vengeance, while assuring him that the executive arm of government would provide whatever assistance is required.

Amidu, an anti-corruption crusader and a former Attorney General, was approved by parliament last week. Enditem
