RAMALLAH, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian authorities announced Thursday to start taking measures of international prosecution against the Palestinians who fled the territories after committing crimes.
Mahmoud Salahuddin, director of the International Bureau of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) in the Palestinian territories, said in a radio statement that the office has begun taking such procedures against a number of wanted Palestinians.
He added that the office is following up the files from Palestinian judicial authorities to work to find out the whereabouts of those wanted and bring them back to the Palestinian territories to justice.
Palestine became a member of the Interpol during a meeting of the organization held in Beijing last September.
During the vote, 75 Interpol members voted in favor of accepting the state of Palestine as a new member, while 24 votes against and 34 votes in abstention. The Interpol has a total of 133 participating states.
Interpol, headquartered in Lyon, France, is considered as the largest international police organization established in 1923.
Salahuddin said he hoped the member countries will work with the Palestinian side at the highest levels.
Hazem Attallah, chief of the West Bank police, met Wednesday in Ramallah a technical delegation of the Interpol.
The delegation finalized the technical work of conducting safe communication between the Palestinian police and Interpol, through the safe system of communication among the members of the organization. Enditem
