Morocco aims to achieve 50-pct drop in road accident fatalities by 2026

RABAT, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Moroccan Prime Minister Saad Eddine El Othmani said on Thursday that the government aims to reduce the fatalities in road accidents by 50 percent by 2026.
But the first step of the new national road safety strategy is to achieve a 25-percent drop in road accident fatalities by 2021, El Othmani said at the weekly cabinet meeting.
He also called for stronger mobilization from various parties to achieve these goals.
Last week, a train collided with a staff transport vehicle in Morocco's northeastern city of Tangier, killing six people and injuring 14 others.
Commenting on the tragic accident, the prime minister promised that sanctions will be taken against those who failed to performe duties.
A total of 3,499 people were killed in road accidents in Morocco in 2017, down 2.62 percent from a year earlier, according to the data issued by the Moroccan Transport Ministry. Enditem
