Lisbon invests in tsunami warning system

Xinhua,February 23, 2018 Adjust font size:

LISBON, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML) is to invest in a tsunami public alarm system, the Jornal de Negocios newspaper reported on Thursday.

The system comprises four warning sirens, two control centers and an integrated communications network. The alarm system will also offer inter-operational capabilities with the warning system already installed in Cascais, a town just outside Lisbon at the mouth of the River Tagus.

The AML is an organization that incorporates the mayors of Lisbon and Cascais and all districts in the Greater Lisbon area, on both sides of the River Tagus.

The system has been ordered from LAFCARR Project & Design in Spain and will cost 48,500 euros, plus VAT.

In 1755, an 8 to 9-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami all but destroyed Lisbon. Experts say the region remains vulnerable to seismic activity. Enditem
