Security cordon officially lifted in Brussels after murder report

Xinhua,February 23, 2018 Adjust font size:

BRUSSELS, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- A security cordon in the Brussels area of Forest was lifted Thursday at about 3 p.m. local time after no suspicious activity was discovered by authorities, the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office said.

Earlier in the day, a man claimed a murder had taken place in the area, according to a spokesperson of Brussels police.

This person was taken into custody by local police and an investigation was subsequently opened.

Later in the morning, the police services were led to believe, based on other testimonies, that potentially armed men could have entrenched themselves in one of the houses.

The Mayor of Forest, Marc-Jean Ghyssels, had previously said that the presence of one or more armed men was suspected in a building on a local street. The reinforcement of the federal police was also requested.

A search was carried out to verify whether a crime had been committed or if armed men were hiding there. The investigations will be finished in due time, the prosecutor's office said. Enditem
